Hey Guys,
I figured I add a rambling bio on my driving experience since the only one that knows me is Mark LaCombe. I did give JJ a mini run down via a PM. Thanks for the setup JJ!
Virtually - I've been playing with the standard xBox360 driving sims for a while but my recent move to rFactor was because of Mark. I spent some time on Mark’s sim and decided PC based sims with a league like USF1 would be fun. So I just picked up the G27 wheel and attached to my office desk / PC with 32” 1080p Samsung. I still struggle with keeping the pedals in place and this means no left foot braking… So I will work on that and other things.
I started doing PCA DE’s in my stock 930 turbo back in 1995. Since then I’ve turned my 930 into a track beast: 1993/4 3.8 RSR look, 2500lbs, 380rwhp, short gears, double adjustable JRZ shocks, 3” un-muffled turbo dump pipe ala 935 = flame shooting GT3 muncher. I did the 4 day Bondurant School in 1998 in Mustangs and Formula Fords. Got moved to the PCA’s advanced/instructor run group in 2001. Did the 4 day Derek Daly Academy at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the outside course with my wife in 2003 - 2 days in Z3’s and two days in the formula fords. I picked them over Skippy at Laguna Seca because of data acquisition. When they lay your laps over an instructor lap it’s amazing how much time you can find. I had a fantastic instructor who spent a few seasons driving with team Kool Green in a Formula Atlantic.
Mark and I met at PCA driving events years ago. He's a big autocross fan and I'm not... ADHD, red/green color blindness and well prepared but laggy 930 turbo put me in a class with a couple SCCA National Champs so 5th in GTO was my best PCA a/x season.. Mark does very well in his class with several Championships with PCA. I however, need more than 4 laps to learn anything…
So, after years of PCA/BMW/Alfa DE’s and Advanced lapping days passing most everyone I started to only enjoy the part where I had my nose up someone butt

Back in 2007 Mark and I pitted next to each other and he mentioned his interest in 944 Cup and my race shop was big on them and I was already interested but wanted a buddy to start with…
Then… September of 2007 I was playing with a tracked prepped 2006 Z06. We got black flagged a couple times that day for playing too close. On the last session of the day on cold Hoosiers I hung back coming onto the straight and without my in-car video rolling watched the Z06 pop his motor going through T1 at almost 160mph and spin on his own snot. I checked up and got sprayed with oil and almost went off while watching the Z06 spin off track, dig in, roll a couple time, land on the drivers A-pillar and catch on fire. I watched his in-car video of the crash and this guy was lucky.. full cage, head containment seat, HANS, fire suit etc… My car has a roll bar and I had a helmet, gloves, jeans and a t-shirt on…. I wouldn’t have survived the same crash…. Shook me up BIG TIME about running that fast, that close without all the proper safety equipment…
So, next time I saw Mark and he mentioned he bought his 944 donor car, I started shopping right away and my 1985.5 showed up on Christmas morning 2007 with a big bow on it thanks to my track pals and race shop owner. March 2008 Mark, another buddy (tired of DE’s in his sweet 2005 GT3) and I went through the SCCA licensing school and had our first race in Portland. For all the years I’ve been on track I was the fastest 930 but my car was so different from everyone else I was wondering if it was the pilot or the plane?? A surprising year to say the least and the most fun I’ve EVER had on track, I highly recommend it.
Mark and I run out front most of the time and we run real close. He got the best of me in our last race of 2009 after we swappede the lead 7+ times in a race.
Here’s a couple links to some pics of Mark and I and our 944's on his Picassa site if anyones interested.
